Blog Returns, Lives Up to Name
When I chose the title "Kevin Does China," little did I know that two months after coming here, I would be performing in S&M scenes in the Chinese film industry. Yep, S&M scenes: leather, whips, deviant sexual activity. That's pretty much my life now.
Okay, enough kidding around, I haven't really abandoned the world of academia for the adult film industry (not yet, anyway). However, last week I was at a film shoot, and I was an extra in the background at an S&M club. The shoot was for an independent film entitled Red Light Revolution. I'm told it's a comedy, but it was a little hard for me to tell, what with the actors speaking in Chinese. What prompted this new career path? Basically some friends of friends tipped me off to the production, which was happening in my neighborhood (Wudaokou), and was in dire need of extras for the pivotal S&M scene. Now, those of you who know me know that there's nothing I like better than helping independent filmmakers (except perhaps recruiting people to help out with my own crazy projects). So when I heard there were folks in need, I donned a leather mask and did my best to look like a creepy bartender while scantily clad women danced in front of me. Tough job, but somebody had to do it.
To all of you who've bugged me about my total neglect of this blog, I apologize. I hope this post makes up for it, as I'd say this little episode illustrates the ridiculousness of my life in Beijing. A lot has happened since I got here, and I have a huge mental backlog of would-be blog posts to write. I might not ever get to most of them, but I've resolved to start posting more frequent, short updates. In the meantime, enjoy the above production pic.
A few things to note:- The scene was shot at the infamous D-22 music club (possibly the subject of another post).
- Yes, camera geeks, that sexy thing in the photo is a Red One!
